Kaya Mooney Afternoon workshop

Kaya Mooney

Kaya Mooney is an American bonsai artist, currently based in Japan. Originally from South Florida, he developed an early fascination with trees through his grandfather’s garden. After relocating to Northern California, Kaya became a full-time apprentice under Boon Manakitivipart and later pursued advanced training at Fujikawa Kouka-en in Osaka, Japan, where he immersed himself in traditional bonsai techniques and aesthetics. In May 2024, Kaya graduated from a five-year apprenticeship and received a professional certification from the Nippon Bonsai Association.

With a preference for deciduous species and a keen eye for natural form, Kaya’s work reflects a blend of Eastern discipline and Western innovation. Currently, Kaya is continuing his work in the Japanese bonsai community, while traveling worldwide to teach and work on bonsai, and sharing his work on his website and social media under “Moonlight Bonsai”.
